After I

Something you already do every day, at a precise moment.

I will

Small and specific. You can raise it later.

On a hard day, I will

So small you could do it on your worst day.

So that I become

Your plan

After I pour my morning coffee, I will read 10 pages so that I become a reader.

On a hard day, I will read 2 pages.

  • Tied to a cue you already have: done
  • A small, specific action: done
  • A minimum version for hard days: done
  • Says who you’re becoming: done

How to use it

  1. Pick a cue: something you already do every day, at a precise moment.

  2. Write the habit small enough to do on your worst day.

  3. Add a minimum version for the days that go sideways.

  4. Finish the sentence with who you’re becoming, then copy it somewhere you’ll see it.

Questions

A plan in the form “When X happens, I will do Y.” Research by Peter Gollwitzer found that plans like this help people act on their goals more reliably than holding the goal alone.

Something that already happens every day without fail, at a specific moment: pouring coffee, brushing your teeth, closing your laptop. “In the morning” is too vague to trigger anything.

Framing a habit around who you’re becoming, rather than a result, gives it a reason to survive the days when the result feels far away.
